Neo-Colonialism Undermines Peace Efforts in DRC and Across Africa

The ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo highlights how neo-colonial dynamics prioritize resource extraction over genuine peace, displacing millions and disrupting education amid vast mineral wealth. True stability demands African-led strategies that tackle exploitation and center civilian voices. The war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) exposes deep-rooted neo-colonial influences that perpetuate instability in Africa’s resource-rich regions. While diplomacy pushes for ceasefires and summits, the crisis has normalized massive suffering, with UNHCR reporting 8.2 million displaced by September 2025, including 5.8 million internally displaced persons.

Unicef data from early 2025 reveals around 9,500 schools closed in North and South Kivu, sidelining 330,000 children and causing at least 3,000 deaths in initial fighting phases. Eastern DRC’s strategic value is undeniable, producing 76% of global cobalt in 2024 per US Geological Survey, fueling demands from batteries to manufacturing.

African Union efforts, like January calls for African-led peace and February ceasefire terms between the government and M23 rebels, show promise but falter against ongoing violations reported by Reuters in March. Neo-colonialism persists by keeping conflicts profitable, with illegal resource exploitation flagged by the AU Peace and Security Council as a key driver.

Peace requires more than elite handshakes; it demands centering civilians—women, youth, faith leaders, and mining communities—in talks. African states must enforce transparent governance, border controls, and sanctions, rejecting opaque deals that enable external interference.

Ultimately, diplomacy falters when war serves commercial ends, making resource hotspots like DRC perpetually vulnerable. Africa must confront these realities head-on for lasting peace.
