Leaders from Uganda’s medical associations have called on the public to avoid speculation as probes intensify into the sudden death of Helen Nakimuli, the 41-year-old Woman MP for Kalangala District.

The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) legislator passed away on April 19 at Alexandra Medical Centre in Kampala after a routine surgical procedure went wrong. Friends and colleagues said she drove herself to the facility for the operation.

Her death has sparked nationwide shock and rumors. Dr. Frank Asiimwe, president of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), expressed deep sorrow while stressing the profession’s dedication to ethical standards and patient safety.

“We remain committed to the highest ethical and professional standards,” Dr. Asiimwe stated, noting that even with rigorous protocols, medical risks cannot be fully eliminated. He pledged UMA’s technical support for any inquiry to ensure scientific integrity and fairness.

Dr. Rogers Kajabwangu, head of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda (AOGU), confirmed an ongoing clinical audit, including the postmortem report from Mulago National Referral Hospital. The facility’s management referred questions to the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, which has not yet responded.

Nakimuli’s body is set for burial on April 23 in Luweero District.
