Democratic Party (DP) president and Minister for Justice Norbert Mao addressed journalists in Kampala, declaring his unwavering commitment to the Speaker position in the upcoming 12th Parliament. Speaking for over three hours, he rejected intimidation attempts and a legal petition aimed at derailing his campaign.

Mao described offers of money to his supporters to abandon him and threats against those backing his bid. ‘Standing firm should not be a crime,’ he stated, vowing to counter these pressures through legal, political, and media channels.

He positioned his candidacy as a push to reform Parliament, criticizing leaders who prioritize personal gain over institutional cleanup. Mao urged National Resistance Movement MPs to back him under their cooperation agreement, emphasizing the need for principled leadership.

Concerns about poisoning surfaced during his Kyankwanzi visits, which he linked to his anti-corruption stance. Undeterred, Mao affirmed that past political threats have not silenced him.

On a court petition challenging his election, Mao called it a sham, noting the petitioner’s failure to serve key parties and questioning its timing amid his Speaker announcement.

Internally, Mao addressed DP divisions, calling for unity and reflection on past collaborations rather than blame.

The race for Speaker remains fiercely contested as the new Parliament approaches.
