Kalangala District held a special council session on April 21, 2026, to honor the late Woman MP Helen Nakimuli, who passed away on April 19 following a failed surgery at Alexander Medical Centre.

Her sister, Irene Nampala, recounted their last conversation before the operation. Nakimuli, battling fibroids, had postponed the procedure due to blood clots before the January elections but remained hopeful. ‘She promised to return strong, but she didn’t,’ Nampala shared with mourners.

The family awaits the postmortem report from the clinic. Nakimuli’s father, orthodox Fr Christopher Walusimbi, who has lost five of his 11 children, urged resilience. ‘Not all seeds germinate as you wish,’ he said, assuring locals of capable family successors for the parliamentary seat.

The district council passed a motion commending her contributions and resolved to rename Lukuba Road, the town council playground, and the women’s ward at Kalangala Health Centre IV in her honor. LC5 chairperson Rajab Semakula echoed demands for the postmortem.

MPs including Moses Kabusu, Francis Zaake, and others pledged to pursue the report in a special April 22 parliamentary sitting and urged the district to resolve for government funding of a skilling centre.

NUP leaders signaled readiness for the by-election, with Flavia Nabagabe affirming the party’s intent to contest. Dr Lina Zedriga called for emulating Nakimuli’s service. RDC Fred Badda announced plans for a technical institute named after her.

Her body was transported from Kalangala Island to Kampala that afternoon for funeral preparations.
