Electoral Commission outlines roadmap for Kikuube District chairperson by-election on June 10

The Electoral Commission (EC) has unveiled the timeline for the by-election to replace Kikuube District’s late chairperson, Peter Banura, who perished in a road crash on April 4, 2026, soon after his re-election.

Under the Local Governments Act, the EC must conduct such elections within six months of a chairperson’s death. Polling day is fixed for June 10, 2026.

The process kicks off with a stakeholders’ meeting on April 27, involving media and other key players. Voter register updates at parish level follow from April 28 to 30, which also marks the deadline for new registrations and location transfers.

Recruitment for voter register display supervisors runs April 27-29, with their lists posted from April 30 to May 5. Training and appointment letters for display officers and others occur on May 7.

The voter register will be displayed at polling stations May 8-12, followed by parish tribunal recommendations May 13-15. Candidate nominations happen May 25-26 at the district headquarters.

Nomination inspections and complaints are handled May 26 to June 1, with a campaign harmonization meeting on May 27. Campaigns officially start May 28 and end June 8.

Polling officials’ recruitment and interviews are May 28-30, accreditation for parties and observers May 26-June 1, and their lists displayed June 1-8. Voter Location Slips issue June 1-10, with training for officials June 4-5.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama urged all stakeholders to follow the guidelines and timelines.
