The Mbale Diocese faces a key leadership change as Bishop John Wilson Nandaah approaches retirement. Enthroned on December 5, 2021, he will step down in January 2027 at age 65, following Anglican Church of Uganda rules.
At least seven priests have shown interest, including Rev Milton Shisa of St Andrew’s Cathedral, Rev Robert Watsala the diocesan secretary, Rev Charles John Walyekere, Rev Canon Alloni Mwisaka, Ven Rev Canon Michael Peter Musingo, Ven Rev Kenneth Shaigi of Bubulo Archdeaconry, and Ven Rev Emma Masolo of Bupoto Archdeaconry.
Other qualified contenders include Ven Rev Peter Natseli, Ven Rev Ivan Khabikula, Rev Philimon Namukongo, Rev Michael Nanyuma, Ven Rev Amos Wafula, Rev Moses Namonyo, Rev Isaac Maliga, Archdeacon of Namunsi, and Rev Patrick Magogo.
In his Easter message, Bishop Nandaah noted that 23 reverends meet the criteria: ordained priests who are theologically trained, spiritually mature, morally upright, and with stable families. He called for prompt complaints to avoid late objections.
The selection starts at the diocesan level, vetting names before sending two to the Provincial House of Bishops. This caution stems from 2021 tensions when rival Abednego Kaswa Watenga left for a breakaway church after losing to Nandaah.
Some members push for raising the retirement age to 70, saying experience peaks later. Established in 1961 with nine archdeaconries and one deanery, the diocese has seen leaders like Erisa Masaba and Patrick Gidudu. Nandaah emphasized pastoral care, development, and land issues.
Church leaders stress blending spiritual insight with stability for the transition.
