Parliament Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Thomas Tayebwa led tributes to Helen Nakimuli, the Woman MP for Kalangala, who passed away on April 19, 2026, following complications from surgery at Alexandra Medical Center.
Among expressed profound shock in a social media post, announcing the death of the Shadow Minister for Information and praying for her family and colleagues. Tayebwa stated that losing a parliamentary colleague deeply affects the house, extending condolences to her family, NUP, and Kalangala residents.
NUP leader Bobi Wine called the news ‘terrible and shocking.’ Former Opposition Leader Mathias Mpuuga praised her energy, hard work, and advocacy for fishing communities’ safety on lakes during her time as Shadow Minister for Fisheries. He noted her peaceful nature and early promise as a Community Development Officer in Kalangala sub-counties.
Born on July 2, 1985, in Lukuba village to priest Christopher Walusimbi and ex-councillor Maria Nalwanga, Nakimuli attended schools including Gayaza and Makerere University for Social Sciences. She excelled in volleyball, captaining a parliamentary team, and received an ecclesial medal from Pope Theodore II.
Tributes highlighted her recent boldness against human rights abuses and humility. Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi recalled speaking to her hours before surgery. Others like Jim Spire Ssentongo and MP Zaake Francis shared personal memories and criticized the health system.
Her body was taken to Mulago for post-mortem.
