Periodontitis is a dangerous gum disease that starts with bacterial plaque on teeth. Without proper brushing and flossing, plaque turns into tartar, irritating gums and causing gingivitis. If ignored, it worsens into periodontitis, where gums recede, pockets form, and infections damage supporting bone.

Early signs are often mild, such as bleeding or swollen gums, bad breath, and receding gumlines. Over time, teeth may loosen, making eating difficult. Many overlook these until major harm sets in.

Key risks include poor hygiene, smoking, diabetes, medications, genetics, stress, and unhealthy eating. These factors heighten infection chances.

Treatment varies by stage: basic cleaning for mild cases, deep scaling and root planing for moderate ones, often with anesthesia. Severe instances need surgery, but success hinges on daily brushing, flossing, and dentist visits.

Prevention is straightforward—brush twice daily, floss, skip tobacco, eat well, control health issues, and see a dentist regularly to catch problems early.

Beyond teeth, periodontitis connects to heart disease, diabetes woes, and breathing issues, highlighting oral health’s role in total wellness.
