Hellen Nakimuli, the Woman MP for Kalangala District in Uganda’s 11th Parliament, died on Sunday after complications from surgery at Alexandra Medical Centre. Her burial is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, at her ancestral home in Luweero District.

On Monday afternoon, A-plus Funeral Company transported her body from Mulago Hospital mortuary to Kalangala via Nakiwogo and Entebbe, as announced by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

Tuesday features a special Kalangala District Council session, public viewing, and return to Kampala via Masaka for an overnight stay in Namungoona.

Wednesday morning brings the body to Parliament for tributes by fellow legislators. In the afternoon, it moves to National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters at Makerere Kavule, followed by a vigil at the family home in Namungoona.

The funeral service on Thursday will occur at Namungoona Orthodox Church, where Nakimuli was a member, before the journey to Luweero.

Speaker Among expressed Parliament’s solidarity, honoring Nakimuli’s legacy as a dedicated legislator and advocate. NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi noted ongoing post-mortem tests and a planned audit of the surgery at Alexandria Medical Centre to determine the cause of death.

Nakimuli, an outspoken opposition figure and shadow minister for ICT & National Guidance, had just been re-elected for a second term. Her death has shocked family, friends, and politicians alike.

Relatives, including daughter Melanire Namirimu from Kibuli Secondary School, joined mourners at Mulago mortuary on Monday.
