The Uganda National Liberation Front (UNLF) positioned itself as a champion of female liberation amid the 1979 Uganda-Tanzania War, particularly following the decisive Battle of Lukaya. This clash marked a turning point, weakening Idi Amin’s forces and paving the way for broader resistance.

UNLF rhetoric promised equality and active roles for women, drawing many into the fight. Yet, female combatants often faced unequal treatment, limited leadership opportunities, and post-war neglect.

Survivors recount stories of bravery overshadowed by systemic barriers. For instance, women handled logistics and medical aid but rarely commanded units, highlighting persistent patriarchal structures.

The Battle of Lukaya not only shifted military dynamics but also exposed tensions in the liberation narrative. Women’s contributions were vital, yet their sacrifices remain underrecognized.

This gap between proclaimed ideals and lived realities continues to influence discussions on gender in Uganda’s history.
