Uganda aims to capture a slice of Egypt’s thriving tourism sector through collaborative efforts to create joint travel itineraries. With Egypt welcoming 19 million visitors in 2025 compared to Uganda’s 1.6 million, officials see Uganda as a natural extension for North African travelers.
Julian Kaggwa, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board, highlighted the complementary appeal of both destinations. Egypt’s pyramids and Nile cruises pair well with Uganda’s wildlife, landscapes, and cultural experiences, especially since the Nile originates in Uganda.
During a Kampala event, Kaggwa welcomed Egyptian broadcasters and influencers on a 10-day tour to experience sites like the Ndere Cultural Centre. These influencers, boasting millions of followers, are expected to become advocates for Uganda in North Africa.
Lt Gen Charles Angina, Uganda’s chargé d’affaires in Cairo, described the initiative as cultural diplomacy. He emphasized positioning Uganda as a unique second stop for Egyptian visitors, not a competitor.
Egypt’s Ambassador Monzer Selim noted the distinct offerings: Uganda’s equatorial safaris and greenery alongside Egypt’s historical deserts. Together, they can draw more tourists from Europe, Asia, and the West to Africa.
Uganda targets 2.2 million arrivals this year amid recovery from Covid-19, despite Middle East tensions impacting travel.
