On Sunday, thousands of faithful and government dignitaries converged at Mt Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, Wakiso District, to celebrate the centre’s 25th anniversary. Church leaders emphasized the need for genuine faith and ethical living during the event.
Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, who led the Catholic Mass, condemned hypocrisy among Christians, pointing to the suspect in the Ggaba daycare killings, Christopher Okello Onyun, who bears a Christian name. He highlighted the centre’s founder, the late Expedito Magembe, as a model of devotion since its inception over two decades ago.
Vice President Jessica Alupo, standing in for President Museveni, praised the centre’s evolution from a modest prayer group in Kiziba Parish in the early 1990s into a major hub drawing over 15,000 attendees to monthly Masses. She noted its establishment as a shrine in 2001 and its vital role in supporting the sick and vulnerable, crediting government aid for infrastructure and outreach.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja underscored the fruitful partnership between the church and state, which has fueled the centre’s expansion. She linked this collaboration to broader national efforts like the Parish Development Model and Emyooga programs to boost economic inclusion.
The jubilee attracted pilgrims, clergy, and officials nationwide, affirming Mt Sion’s status as a premier spiritual destination in Uganda.
