Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ababu Namwamba, has stepped in to aid a 13-year-old Kenyan girl left stranded in Kampala.
Beryl Akumu Juma, from Muyuni in Vihiga County, was brought to Uganda by her cousin Kevin Odhiambo under the pretense of a hotel job. She was abandoned on a flyover and later found by well-wishers who took her to Central Police Station.
In a viral video shared by Sally Opwanda, Beryl pleaded for help, stating she did not know her location and asking for her parents, George Odera Odhiambo and Phillister Agutu, to come get her. She revealed she had dropped out of Grade 6 due to school fees.
Namwamba’s team retrieved Beryl from the police station and placed her in safe custody at the Kenya High Commission. They have contacted her family in Kisumu County, where she lives with her aged grandmother as an orphan.
The commissioner emphasized priorities of reuniting her with relatives, getting her back to school, and assessing her home for safety. Arrangements are in place for her uncle to travel to Kampala.
