Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Minsa Kabanda, has urged contractors to hasten road construction projects across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area without sacrificing quality.

During site inspections, Kabanda emphasized that these roads enhance mobility, link communities, and boost economic opportunities. She called for adherence to timelines and quality benchmarks.

The efforts fall under two key programs: the African Development Bank-backed Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project and the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme. These span Kampala and nearby regions like Kira, Nansana, Entebbe, Mukono, Makindye-Ssabagabo, and Mpigi.

KCCA officials note the city is shifting from pothole-ridden streets to a bustling construction zone, accepting short-term traffic issues for lasting gains. Under GKMA-UDP, plans include over 440 km of roads, 19 markets, two slaughterhouses, and 54 km of drainage.

In Kampala, more than 70 km of roads are slated for upgrades, plus market and drainage improvements. A Shs60 billion contract in Makindye-Ssabagabo and Entebbe, led by China First Highway Engineering and Jilk Construction, is now at the asphalt phase, with completion expected in six months. Project manager Liu Guang highlighted benefits for transport, connectivity, and regional growth.

Residents appreciate better access, less dust, and mud. KCCA reports 78% progress on the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, with over 120 km upgraded, including Salaama Road, Spring Road, and Portbell Road.

This aligns with Uganda’s urban development goals, despite construction disruptions.
