Kanungu Laborer Severs Employer's Hand in Charcoal Theft Dispute

Police in Kanungu District are investigating a brutal attack where a charcoal burner chopped off his employer’s hand amid theft accusations.
The victim, Eriabu Aineplani from Omukibaare Village in Kayungwe sub-county, employed Brian as a casual laborer for charcoal production. Complaints had mounted about missing charcoal, allegedly linked to the worker.
On April 18, 2026, around 1:00pm, Aineplani confronted Brian at the site in front of other workers. The suspect reportedly grabbed a panga, attacked, and severed the victim’s hand as he tried to defend himself.
Local chairperson Frank Turinawe reported the incident to Nyakabungo Police Station. Officers visited the scene, gathered eyewitness statements, and seized the panga as evidence.
Aineplani is receiving treatment at Kambuga Hospital. Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate has urged the public to help locate the fugitive suspect.
