A tragic road accident claimed the lives of two individuals on April 18, 2026, around 11:05am along the Mbale-Tirinyi Highway in Kamonkoli Town Council, Budaka District.
The victims were identified as Fred Tumusiime, an engineer at Kamuge Seed School in Pallisa District, and Agali Kanyago, a peasant from Bukatikoko Village in Nabugalo Parish, Kaderuka Sub-county.
Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa explained that a silver Mercedes-Benz traveling from Mbale towards Budaka collided head-on with a maroon Haojue motorcycle heading the opposite way with a passenger.
The impact killed the motorcycle rider and passenger instantly. Budaka Police Station team, led by ASP Daniel Chemongesi, processed the scene, and the bodies were taken to Budaka Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem.
Both vehicles were impounded at Budaka Police Station for inspection. The Mercedes-Benz driver fled and remains at large, with police pursuing him.
Preliminary findings suggest careless overtaking caused the crash, and investigations continue to confirm details.
The Mbale-Tirinyi highway is notorious for frequent fatalities. Uganda recorded 5,383 road deaths in 2025, averaging 15 daily, mostly due to human errors like speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions.
