A tragic motorcycle accident in Yumbe District claimed the life of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Wilfred Egwuyu, aged 44, on Friday evening.
AIP Egwuyu, attached to Arua City Central Police Station and a student at Arua Institute of Health Sciences, was riding a Yamaya motorcycle from Yumbe Town towards Yumbe Hospital with a passenger.
North West Nile Region Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea reported that at around 8pm in Manduru Cell, Ombea Ward, Kuru Town Council, the motorcycle’s kickstand struck the ground as it wasn’t folded up. This caused the rider to lose control, leading to a fall and severe head injury.
Egwuyu lost consciousness and was rushed to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His passenger, Geoffrey Ambayo, 34, from Kuru Town Council and also a student at the institute, is in stable condition at the same facility.
The motorcycle was initially held by the local council but has been moved to Kuru Police Station for inspection. Traffic officers visited the scene, and the officer’s body was examined by the Regional Police Surgeon before being taken to Arua City mortuary.
