Uganda has secured Shs11 billion to address obstetric fistula, a serious health issue causing abnormal connections between birth canals and other organs, often from prolonged or obstructed labor.
Ambassador Hildigunnur Engilbertsdóttir, Head of Mission at the Embassy of Iceland, highlighted this commitment during the announcement. The funds aim to enhance treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation efforts nationwide.
Fistula affects thousands of women in Uganda, leading to chronic pain, infections, and social stigma. This investment will support surgical repairs, community awareness, and healthcare infrastructure improvements.
Health officials welcome the funding as a vital step toward eradicating fistula by 2030, aligning with national and global health goals.
