Authorities in Mbale City, eastern Uganda, arrested six day scholars from Nkoma Secondary School on April 14, 2026, following a brutal assault and robbery caught on video.
The attack targeted 20-year-old Buyinza Siraj, a Senior Four student at Mbale Progressive Secondary School, as he walked home along Nabuyonga Rise in Kichafu Cell, Namakwekwe Ward. Armed with a knife, the suspects waylaid him around 5pm, stole his smartphone and Shs20,000 cash, according to Elgon Regional Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika.
A passer-by recorded the incident, and the footage spread rapidly on social media, prompting Buyinza to file a complaint at Nkoma Police Station. He identified the attackers, leading to their detention at Nakaloke Central Police Station. Officers recovered a knife from the scene and conducted a medical exam on the victim.
Nkoma Secondary School head teacher Abubakar Kawanguzi suspended the six suspects—students from S.2B—pending a Board of Governors decision, citing violations of school rules including fighting, skipping classes, and disrespect.
Deputy Resident City Commissioner Hamza Banja, addressing students at the school on April 16, condemned the trend of youth carrying weapons like knives, sharp rings, wires, and even marijuana. He warned against forming gangs, naming groups such as Street Killer, Mission Finisher, and others active in Mbale, and vowed more arrests.
This case echoes prior violence, including the fatal stabbing of a Mbale High School student in July 2025 near Amber Store.
