Northern Uganda's 12 Districts Launch 3 Million Tree Planting Campaign Against Deforestation
Twelve districts in northern Uganda have kicked off a major initiative to plant three million trees across 300 schools, aiming to combat severe deforestation and build climate resilience. The two-year drive, led by My Tree Initiative Uganda and Absa Bank Uganda, will create over 50 forests of indigenous and fruit trees. Twelve districts in northern Uganda—Gulu, Lira, Arua, Kitgum, Pader, Agago, Apac, Oyam, Dokolo, Nebbi, Yumbe, and Adjumani—have united for a ambitious tree-planting campaign to reverse deforestation’s harsh effects.
The project, launched at Gulu High School, targets planting three million seedlings over two years in 300 schools. Backed by My Tree Initiative Uganda and Absa Bank Uganda, every tree will be geotagged and tracked until 2027 for survival and impact.
Absa Bank’s Francis Topacho highlighted the focus on schools to foster environmental stewardship among youth, aligning with national sustainability goals. Gulu High School received 2,000 seedlings, including mango, guava, jackfruit, and native species, with students tasked to plant and care for them.
Deputy head teacher Moses Eguma emphasized turning pupils into advocates for reforestation, countering community tree-cutting practices. My Tree Initiative’s Enger Ashiraf noted the region’s vulnerability to climate shocks from past degradation, urging youth-led preservation efforts.
Gulu City Deputy Mayor Christine Olok praised the drive as the largest reforestation effort locally, calling it a beacon of hope against illegal logging and charcoal production. She urged schools to prioritize seedling survival.
