Mao and Among Clash Over Speaker's 'Bedroom Keys' at Kyankwanzi Retreat

Tensions erupted at the NRM's Kyankwanzi retreat when Norbert Mao hinted at his Speaker ambitions, prompting Anita Among to firmly warn him against entering 'private rooms.' The exchange escalates a months-long feud rooted in Mao's past 'accidental Speaker' jab and NRM's endorsement dynamics. The NRM’s team-building retreat at Kyankwanzi turned dramatic as Norbert Mao, a coalition partner, openly signaled his interest in the Speaker’s position. This bold move disrupted the usual discreet politicking at the event.

Anita Among, the current Speaker, responded assertively, implying that guests should enjoy the hospitality but stay out of restricted areas—like the metaphorical bedroom. Her composed retort underscored her authority and set social media abuzz.

Mao hit back sharply, decrying the response as poor etiquette and invoking the ultimate decider in Uganda’s political household: the President. He framed it as a deeper family dispute over hierarchy.

This public spat builds on prior friction. Mao had previously labeled Among an ‘accidental Speaker,’ a stinging critique in local parlance. Among countered by highlighting her election by over 400 MPs, dismissing any fluke narrative.

The NRM had initially endorsed her strongly, but the President’s call for caution introduced uncertainty. Other contenders lurk in the wings, turning the Speaker race into a prolonged power struggle over influence and respect.

As debates rage about access and authority, the contest has evolved far beyond a simple chair.
