The Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, alongside Wakiso District Local Government, has commissioned the construction of the 6.5km Kayunga-Senge-Kawanda Road. Valued at Shs37.5 billion, the project falls under the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme.

This vital route connects the Kampala-Hoima road to the Kampala-Bombo highway, bridging River Mayanja between Busiro and Kyaddondo County. It passes through Wakiso Town Council and mainly Wakiso Sub-county, serving as a key gateway from urban Kampala to Wakiso and beyond.

Local leaders like Wakiso Sub-county Councillor Livingstone Kaboggoza, known as ‘Taata Myaala,’ highlighted past woes. Heavy rains often flooded the river, halting all vehicle and motorcycle traffic and crippling businesses. The road’s poor state had persisted for over 40 years.

Traders shared relief. Chapati seller Brian Kisige in Senge Village noted customers avoiding his stall due to dust. Boda boda rider Samuel Malege described rainy season chaos, with pedestrians paying Shs5,000 to cross the flooded section, forcing long detours.

Contracted to Bouch (U) Limited and Nyoro Joint Venture, works are slated for completion in 18 months by September 2027. Undersecretary Monica Edemacu flagged off the project, demanding timely, high-quality delivery under close supervision, noting delays since the November 2025 contract signing.

Residents anticipate growth. Better access should spur permanent structures, reduce dust, and enhance socio-economic development, though some worry about rising rents. Outgoing Wakiso Chairperson Matia Lwanga Bwanika emphasized its role in linking congested highways.

Elderly resident Teopista Nakiwala welcomed the upgrade but called for fixes on nearby flooding roads like Naluvule-Senge.
