The Apaa land dispute in northern Uganda has turned deadly, with recent violence claiming four lives and injuring several others. Police have detained at least 10 individuals linked to the clashes.

On April 8, suspects believed to be from the Madi community attacked Acholi residents, killing two-year-old Patience Agenrwot, injuring Fred Okwera, and burning six houses. Two days later, on April 10 in Rubangabini Village, Ofu area, a counter-attack attributed to the Acholi community resulted in three deaths: Mamawi Karolino (64) from Moyo District, and Anna Abiria (48) and Susan Onzia (57) from Obongi District. Two more people were seriously hurt.

North West Nile police spokesperson Collins Asea confirmed the suspects are in custody, with case files being prepared for court. Regional police commander Joseph Mwesige announced that those involved in the killings will face trial in a court martial because of their use of dangerous weapons. He condemned violence, illegal land grabs, intimidation, and property destruction, promising firm action while supporting peace efforts.

During a community meeting in Apaa, 501 Brigade Commander Lt Col Nathan Bainomugisha stressed peaceful coexistence, saying stability relies on unity. Resident District Commissioners Geoffrey Oceng (Amuru) and Swaib Toko (Adjumani) pledged to foster harmony and urged focus on economic development. Adjumani District Police Commander Herbert Masembe called the attacks barbaric and invited locals to report missing persons as security forces hunt perpetrators.

Security official Rashul Bakole emphasized that residents must participate in resolving the conflict.
