The Startimes Uganda Premier League title race gained extra intensity after leaders Vipers played out a 1-1 draw with 17-time champions SC Villa at a packed Fufa Kadiba Stadium on Wednesday.

Hillary Mukundane put Vipers ahead with a header from Odhili Chukwuma’s corner in the 64th minute. Frank Ssebuufu leveled for Villa just four minutes later, nodding in a deflected cross from Najib Yiga for his eighth goal of the season.

Vipers nearly stole victory in added time when Milton Karisa broke through on a pass from substitute Isaac Ogwang, but Villa keeper David Lukwago made a superb save to secure the point.

The draw marks Vipers’ second successive dropped points, leaving them vulnerable. Kitara, on 47 points in second, can move within two points of the top with a win over KCCA, who sit seven points back in third, at Lugogo on Friday.

Both Kitara and KCCA face Vipers later, with KCCA’s clash at month’s end adding further intrigue. Villa, now fourth and seven points off the pace with seven games remaining, expressed frustration over refereeing decisions, including a potential red card for Vipers’ Enock Ssebagala.

Other UPL results: UPDF 0-1 Express, Calvary 0-0 Lugazi.
