Commissioner of Police Michael Mugabi, attached to the Directorate of Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, has broken his silence on rumors of his arrest by the military over an alleged gold scam.
In an interview with Daily Monitor, Mugabi clarified that he had been away on sensitive state duties, details of which he cannot disclose due to professional obligations. “I was on state duties, and I am available on my mobile phones numbers. It was a fabricated story,” he stated.
The rumors stemmed from February when Defence and Intelligence Security (DIS) requested an interaction with Mugabi for investigations. The Inspector General of Police relayed the information, and Mugabi, accompanied by his supervisor, visited DIS headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.
Mugabi stayed to assist the DIS team before proceeding on state duties. He noted that military notification preceded his absence, but colleagues misinterpreted the information gap as an arrest upon his return.
“I have never been involved in any gold deals,” Mugabi affirmed, attributing the allegations to efforts to damage his reputation. Police spokesman Rusoke Kituuma has repeatedly declined to comment.
