Residents of Kanungu district are facing severe hardships after the Matanda-Kihihi bridge gave way under heavy rains two weeks ago. This vital link connecting Nyamirama, Matanda, and Kihihi sub-counties has crippled transport and access to essential services.

People now pay Shs2,000 to Shs5,000 to be carried across the river on the backs of local men, a dangerous practice especially with high water levels during rains. Dan Turyamwiuka from Kyiruruma Cell described carrying sick individuals to Matanda Health Centre III as extremely risky.

Motorcycles and vehicles cannot cross, forcing riders like Arineitwe Moses and Henry Twinomugisha to take lengthy detours to Kihihi Town Council, complicating nighttime travel and business.

The bridge had prior damage from floods three months ago, with culverts washed away, before recent downpours finished it off, according to Kyiruruma Cell Chairperson Katabagwa Festo.

Frustrated locals, including Wilson Agaba, urge district leaders to provide materials for a temporary fix while awaiting a permanent structure. Boda boda riders question the silence from MPs and officials despite prior warnings.

Nyamirama Sub-county Chairperson Gad Kabagambe says they await district response. Kanungu District Chairperson Eng. Sam Kajojo assures calm, noting talks with the Ministry of Works and Transport and Shs20 million allocated for 2026/2027 repairs, though insufficient.
