Kampala Fuel Prices Show Significant Variations Across Stations
Spot checks at 17 fuel stations in Kampala reveal diesel prices ranging from Shs5,049 to Shs5,350 per litre and petrol from Shs5,090 to Shs5,400 per litre. Fuel prices in Kampala differ widely between stations, according to recent checks across 17 outlets. Diesel costs between Shs5,049 and Shs5,350 per litre, while petrol ranges from Shs5,090 to Shs5,400 per litre.
The lowest diesel price was at Excel station in Kireka-Namugongo at Shs5,049, with Total Nakawa charging the highest at Shs5,350. For petrol, Luqman in Kyambogo-Banda offered Shs5,245, while several Shell stations hit Shs5,400.
Stations like Moil and Luqman provided the best deals on both fuels, both at Shs5,090 for diesel. Major brands such as Shell and Total tended toward higher ends, with Shell petrol consistently at Shs5,390–5,400.
Dr. Patricia Litho from the Ministry of Energy confirmed a 119 million litre shipment has docked in Mombasa, with trucks already en route to Kampala. She urged calm, noting ample supply and price differences due to dealer competition.
These variations stem from deregulated markets influenced by global oil prices, exchange rates, import costs from Mombasa, taxes, and station margins. A Shs301 diesel gap means Shs15,050 savings on a 50-litre fill-up at cheaper spots.
Kenya’s recent VAT reduction on fuel could help stabilize regional supplies along the Mombasa-Kampala route, keeping Uganda’s prices lower than other East African states.
