The High Court in Kampala has cleared Christopher Okello, the main suspect in the Ggaba murder case, to continue standing trial. A medical evaluation submitted to the court states that despite suffering from sickle cell disease, Okello is in a stable mental condition and capable of following proceedings.
Trial Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha had halted hearings on Wednesday when Okello reported feeling emotionally unwell. She instructed the Court Registrar to coordinate with Luzira Upper Prison for an urgent medical check.
Court reconvened Thursday amid delays from late arrival of the accused and heavy rains. After a prayer, Justice Khaukha outlined the report’s key points: Okello’s sickle cell condition, two months without medication prior to prison, being underweight but now improved, and overall good mental state.
Addressing Okello directly, the judge confirmed his readiness. ‘Yes, yes, I’m in a stable state of mind, my lord,’ he replied, allowing the Ggaba killings trial to proceed.
