Police from Old Kampala Division discovered an AK-47 rifle at Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, Kampala Central Division.
The incident unfolded on April 14, 2026, around 5am, as detailed by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala.
A bus conductor loading passengers for Mbarara was approached by an unidentified man wanting to transport his bag. When asked to open it for a security check, the passenger refused, sparking suspicion.
The conductor then physically searched the bag and felt what seemed like a gun, quickly notifying security.
A police task team arrived promptly, searching the luggage and finding the AK-47 concealed in an empty magazine case, wrapped in white polythene, and tucked inside a ‘usofia’ bag. No ammunition was present.
The suspect escaped immediately and is still on the run. Police are working to identify and arrest him.
SP Kawala noted that probes continue and called on the public to stay alert and report anything unusual.
