Police in Wakiso have detained four suspects responsible for a wave of break-ins at religious sites, including churches and mosques. The arrests followed a burglary at Kavumba Seventh-day Adventist Church over the weekend, where thieves stole music equipment like a mixer and amplifier.

A resident’s tip led officers to one suspect’s home, where the stolen goods were hidden. Searches uncovered additional items taken from a nearby mosque, such as carpets, curtains, and other valuables.

Kituuma Rusoke, police spokesperson, confirmed the recovery and linked the group to similar incidents targeting public address systems. Church elder Aaron Kyoyita noted that burglars smashed glass doors with a brick, leaving the piano and speakers behind.

Further probes revealed stolen vehicle plates, clothes, shoes, and jerry cans at accomplices’ residences. Locals described the suspects as recent renters who slept days and held suspicious night meetings.

Authorities highlight a rising trend of such thefts, with a Catholic sub-parish losing chalices worth Shs2 million last month. Investigations continue, with more arrests possible.

The 2025 Uganda Police Crime Report lists theft as the top offence, with 56,360 cases reported, down from 2024, and thousands proceeding to court.
