Jane Frances Acilo Nkya, founder and executive director of the Jane Acilo Foundation, has been honored by the Mandela Awards Commission for her outstanding humanitarian contributions.

The accolade highlights her lifelong dedication to restoring dignity and fostering sustainable empowerment for women, youth, and vulnerable communities. Her initiatives cover education, economic development, health education, and social safeguards, blending urgent aid with enduring change.

Dubbed a visionary leader, Acilo’s efforts resonate throughout Africa. The ceremony took place at a dinner event in Johannesburg’s Park Hyatt Hotel, where Ndileka Mandela, co-founder and chairperson of the commission and Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter, presented the award.

Fikile Mbalula, ANC secretary-general, praised her in a video message for embodying Mandela’s values of social justice and inclusive growth. Acilo called the recognition a profound trust, motivating her team to expand their collaborative vision for an empowered Africa.

She honored her mother via the Dr Caroline Abeja Education Grant, aiding girls in northern Uganda, and continues impactful programs like medical outreaches in areas such as Oyam district.

Uganda’s envoy to South Africa, Paul Amoru, celebrated her as an exceptional Ugandan whose leadership exemplifies real impact over mere positions.
