Dr. Catherine Namara’s calling to medicine began as a child in Kampala when she witnessed her grandmother succumb to a stroke without adequate help. Feeling helpless, she vowed to become a doctor who saves lives in critical moments.

Her academic excellence shone early, topping Uganda’s Central Region in Primary Seven at Green Hill Academy in 2010. This secured a Daily Monitor scholarship to Mt St Mary’s College Namagunga, where she achieved eight aggregates in UCE 2014. A New Vision scholarship followed for A-Levels, and top UACE results in 2016 earned a government spot at Makerere University for medicine.

Scholarships eased financial burdens for her family, allowing focus on studies. An exchange at Italy’s Magna Graecia University highlighted gaps in Uganda’s healthcare, fueling her resolve to improve it.

Interning at Aga Khan University Hospital, a mass casualty event from a car crash revealed her passion for emergency medicine—a nascent field in Uganda. Now a first-year resident at Makerere, she stands alone as the female in her cohort.

Challenges persist in the male-dominated specialty, including patient misconceptions, yet Namara persists, supported by a Seed Global Health scholarship. She navigates chaotic wards with limited resources but notes progress via national policies.

Grounded by faith, family, and mentors, she inspires women to enter the field, aiming to build local emergency care capacity one life at a time.
