Tour guides serve as the primary touchpoints for visitors, profoundly influencing how Uganda is perceived and shared with the world. At the inaugural Annual Tourist Guides Conference held on April 11, 2026, stakeholders emphasized their importance beyond mere navigation.
Dr. Lilly Ajarova, Senior Presidential Advisor on tourism, opened the event by calling guides ‘storytellers, cultural interpreters, conservation ambassadors, and brand custodians.’ This comes as Uganda ramps up its ‘Explore Uganda, the Pearl of Africa’ initiative to compete with neighbors like Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
The conference shifted focus from natural attractions to frontline service quality. Ajarova noted that identical itineraries can yield vastly different experiences based on the guide’s expertise and enthusiasm. Modern travelers demand immersive, narrative-driven encounters rather than rote facts.
Sessions covered professionalism, ethics, digital tools, and conservation impacts. Guides shape tourist behavior in parks, promoting respect for wildlife and communities to ensure sustainable tourism.
Challenges like inconsistent training and lack of recognition were acknowledged. Organizers aim to establish annual events for better regulation, skills enhancement, and collaboration across government and private sectors.
Ajarova stressed personal accountability: ‘What story will guests take home about Uganda because of you?’ With coordinated efforts, a stronger guiding profession promises a brighter tourism future.
