Lira Regional Referral Hospital in northern Uganda features a state-of-the-art satellite laboratory that has earned international acclaim. On a recent Friday, a Ugandan MP specifically requested a Covid-19 test from the lab before meeting President Yoweri Museveni, underscoring its trusted reputation.
Funded by the World Bank’s Uganda COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project with about Shs4.5 billion, the Level II Biosafety lab was commissioned in April 2025. It processes over 100 samples in two hours using sophisticated equipment, debunking claims it was just an empty structure.
Dr. Benard Ongora, the lab head, notes that results are verified globally via rigorous traceability and auto-generated QR codes. Even international visitors rely on its diagnostics before seeking treatment abroad.
The lab supports northern Uganda, including Gulu and Karamoja, with advanced services beyond basic tests. These include chemistry for liver, kidney, and lipid profiles; microbiology for antibiotic resistance; histology and oncology for cancer biopsies; cardiac markers; HIV and Hepatitis viral load monitoring; and fertility hormones.
It also aids public health surveillance for outbreaks like measles, COVID-19, and Ebola, while supporting the hospital’s dialysis unit. Plans are underway for DNA paternity testing to meet local needs.
Hospital director Dr. Andrew Odur praises it as a world-class center restoring public trust. Administrator Peter Okello Odeke promotes an open-door policy, engaging media and young leaders to address issues proactively.
