Security has been significantly heightened in Kampala as Uganda prepares for the annual Kabaka Birthday Run on Sunday, April 12. The Uganda Police Force is partnering with the UPDF, counterterrorism units, and Buganda Kingdom representatives to create a safe space for the large crowds expected, including the Kabaka and dignitaries.

Deputy Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, Luke Owoyesigyire, highlighted the need for vigilance due to the event’s massive turnout. Uniformed and plain-clothes officers will patrol the 5km, 10km, and 20km routes, with checks at key points and the Mengo venue. Only those in official running kits will gain entry, and suspicious items are banned.

Police Community Liaison Officer SP Aisha Kayongo emphasized their dual role in security and participation. Officers have prepped through meetings with organizers, deploying patrols, foot teams, and ambulances for quick responses. She stressed that safety and health are vital for national progress.

The run, themed ‘Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child against HIV/AIDS,’ promotes prevention and responsible living. Buganda Kingdom’s Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga urged proactive HIV testing, especially by women demanding it from partners, and warned against infidelity and risky behaviors in social spots like bars.

This event precedes Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s official birthday celebration on April 13 at Orthodox Church Namungoona.
