A tragic accident claimed four lives on Friday evening when a Fuso truck loaded with sugarcane veered off the Kamuli-Namasagali road in Bulunda village and landed on a Bajaj boxer motorcycle.
The victims, identified by police, were Grace Mudumba, the rider from Naibowa, Butansi in Kamuli District; Lydia Nanzala, 38, also from Naibowa; and Stephen Makayi, 40, and Charles Balinaine, 42, both from Busiba Cell in Kamuli Municipality.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, registration UAM 983F, was heading from Namasagali to Kamuli when a burst rear tyre caused it to swerve sharply right to avoid an oncoming Sinotruck. The vehicle lost control, overturned, and buried the motorcycle (UDL 411N) and its passengers under the heavy sugarcane load.
The truck driver and crew fled the scene, prompting police to urge the public for information leading to their arrest.
Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega warned heavy goods vehicle drivers against sudden swerves, reckless overtaking, and abrupt maneuvers on narrow roads. He advised reducing speed gradually and braking safely instead.
Lubega also reminded motorcyclists to keep safe distances from large trucks and stay vigilant.
Investigations continue at Kamuli Central Police Station.
