The Lira District Union of Persons Living with Disabilities (LIDUPED Foundation) welcomed a vital donation of mobility aids valued at Shs100 million from Mission for Disability Uganda. The package features 60 wheelchairs, 50 white canes for the visually impaired, hand crutches, and mobile toilets, targeting enhanced mobility for over 200 beneficiaries.

LIDUPED Executive Director Jasper Opio emphasized the ongoing crisis, noting that without these tools, PWDs in rural villages remain stuck at home, missing out on community events, markets, jobs, and government services. He stated that the aids will boost their involvement in economic and social life, fostering greater productivity.

Christen Kokonya, Deputy Executive Director for Operations at Mission for Disability Uganda, explained their broad mission to uplift PWDs through assistive devices, education, health services, and spiritual support. The group also eyes future initiatives like better housing for vulnerable families.

Beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude. Leone Ayo shared that his new wheelchair will allow him to reach markets and start income-generating ventures, while Gwido Obong urged more aid for rural PWDs struggling with transport barriers.

Apac District PWD councillor Sarah Aceng Elem pointed out the funding shortfall at local levels, where no budgets exist for such devices, forcing reliance on donors. She called for central government action to bridge the gap.

Stakeholders stress that ramping up investments in mobility aids is key to promoting inclusion and economic participation for PWDs in northern Uganda.
