Family breakdowns contribute significantly to crime in Uganda, making initiatives to strengthen households essential. In Buyende District, the Responsible, Engaged and Loving (REAL) Fathers Project targets young fathers aged 16 to 25, equipping them with skills in gender equality, childcare, communication, and positive parenting.

Implemented by Holistic Initiative for Community Development (HOLD) Uganda, with partners like Impact and Innovations Development Centre, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and funding from LEGO Foundation, the program uses mentorship, home visits, group discussions, and outreach to foster change in the Busoga Sub-region.

Participants report positive transformations: greater involvement in childcare, improved partner communication, and reduced violent behavior. While broader challenges like unemployment and poor infrastructure persist, this grassroots effort rebuilds family units, curbing crime cycles at their root.

Such programs complement law enforcement by instilling values early, proving that informed parenting strengthens society.
