President Yoweri Museveni praised the late Peter Banura, who served as Kikuube District Chairperson, for championing a people-centered agenda focused on unity, wealth creation, road construction, tourism, and environmental protection.

Museveni’s message, read by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at Banura’s burial on April 9, 2026, in Kigaya Cell, Buhimba Town Council, highlighted Banura’s role in steering development in the newly formed district.

Banura, aged 48 and son of retired Major General Matayo Kyaligonza—Uganda’s ambassador to Burundi—died after a speeding taxi struck him in Butyamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council. Another victim succumbed on Easter Sunday at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, per Albertine police.

Finance Minister Matia Kasaija blamed such tragedies on alcohol-fueled speeding, warning against driving under the influence and suspecting the same in Banura’s case.

Buhaguzi East MP Stephen Aseera Itaza decried rising road deaths and demanded tighter controls on driving permits.

Tributes poured in from Prime Minister of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Andrew Byakutaga, who called Banura consultative and supportive of kingdom initiatives, and Maj Gen Daniel Kakono representing CDF Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who noted his patriotism.

Banura’s father emphasized his son’s push for broader Ugandan and East African unity beyond regional lines. He leaves behind a widow and three children.
