Lira Regional Referral Hospital plans to hire more than 150 health professionals in the 2026/2027 financial year after receiving Shs4.8 billion in additional funding. Hospital director Dr. Andrew Odur shared this update during the facility’s first State of the Hospital Address.

The new positions include consultants, nurses, midwives, and allied health workers, easing the workload on the current 320 staff. This will bring the total workforce close to 500.

Dr. Odur highlighted upcoming projects like a new ward complex, reclaiming 10.4 acres of land, perimeter fencing, and staff housing. The hospital is also advancing specialized services in fertility, neonatology, cardiology, neurotrauma, and endoscopy.

Short-term completions include private wing expansion, road paving, theatre equipping, and walkway canopies. Past achievements feature a satellite unit, 45-bed gynaecology ward expansion, ICU launch, and 174 surgeries.

Challenges persist with 7,592 malaria cases, 1,742 urinary tract infections, and 1,038 sickle cell cases last year. Speaker Bosco Omongo urged more funding, especially with AFCON 2027 matches in Lira, and called for a larger mortuary.

Serving nine northern Uganda districts and 2.5 million people, the 401-bed hospital offers obstetrics, gynaecology, surgery, and internal medicine under the Ministry of Health.
