The Kabaka Birthday Run, launched in 2014 to celebrate Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s birthday, has become a cornerstone of Uganda’s public health efforts. Starting with campaigns against obstetric fistula and sickle cell disease, it now prioritizes HIV/AIDS awareness, contributing to fewer new infections in the Buganda region since 2020.

Thousands are set to gather in Kampala this weekend for the event, themed ‘Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/AIDS by 2030’. With kit distribution points buzzing, runners are encouraged to collect their Shs25,000 kits—essential entry passes and symbols of solidarity—before they sell out.

The 5km mass race kicks off at Lubiri, winding through the Royal Mile, Kisingiri Road, Albert Cook Road, Butikkiro Road, Rubaga Road, and back via Musajja Alumbwa Road and Lubiri Ring Road. Longer 10km and 21km options cater to more experienced athletes, maintaining the event’s inclusive vibe.

Key partners include main sponsor Airtel Uganda for mobilization and kits, I&M Bank, dfcu Bank, Nation Media Group, UNAIDS, and the Uganda AIDS Commission. At the launch, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga hailed it as a vital tool for promoting testing, ARV adherence, prevention, and engaging men and youth.

Owek. Robert Sserwanga, Buganda’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Arts, confirmed the familiar route ensures safety and coordination.
