A heartbreaking incident at Rutete Health Centre IV in Kiko Town Council, Kabarole District, has left the family of 38-year-old Diana Kogere grieving the loss of both her and her unborn child on March 28.

Kogere arrived at the facility around 8:00 am experiencing labor pains. A midwife examined her, noting she was three centimeters dilated with stable vitals for both mother and baby. The family was advised to have her walk and drink warm water to aid labor progression.

By 11:00 am, a re-examination showed normal progress. However, labor stalled by 4:00 pm. At 6:00 pm, as Kogere weakened, requests for a doctor or referral went unheeded until a midwife called Dr. Sam at 7:59 pm.

The doctor, reportedly in nearby Fort Portal, promised quick arrival but showed up around 10:45 pm—nearly three hours later—and rushed her to theatre. Tragically, 20 minutes in, he informed the family of her death; the baby also perished.

Relatives claim no clear explanation was provided for the surgery or cause of death. They further allege the doctor seemed intoxicated and refused a death certificate, opting only for internal records.

District authorities held a meeting with health officials, the facility head, the doctor, and family. Officials labeled Kogere high-risk, citing prior traditional birth attendant use—a claim the family denies. No agreement was reached.

Kogere’s mother, Topista Katusabe, demands an independent probe, threatening legal action. Kabarole District Chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga confirmed an internal audit was sent to the Ministry of Health for review.

Kogere leaves behind five children, the oldest in Senior Two. The World Health Organisation notes about 260,000 annual global maternal deaths, highlighting ongoing healthcare challenges.
