Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court turned down a request for temporary bail from National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. He sought release to attend the funeral of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, who died on Wednesday after fighting breast cancer.

Mufumbiro remains on remand, accused of inciting NUP youth to assault security officers and conducting illegal military drills. Prosecutors argue these acts endanger public order and national security.

His burial was set for Saturday in Luuka District. However, Chief Magistrate Doreen Ainembabazi rejected the plea during a virtual session on Friday. She highlighted the charges’ gravity, potential 10-year sentences, and flight risk.

The court deemed sureties inadequate, including Mufumbiro’s father, retired magistrate Moses Baligeya, and Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga.

Post-ruling, defense lawyers walked out in protest against the lack of physical accused presence, questioning fair trial rights. They boycotted proceedings for 14 other NUP supporters before Magistrate Damalie Agumaasiimwe.

Lawyer Kato Tumusiime voiced concerns over legal representation and hearing fairness.
