Fatal Brake Failure on Mabira Highway Claims Two Lives, Injures Seven

A tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning at around 7:40am at Kinoni village in Mabira Forest along the Kampala-Jinja Highway in Buikwe District. An Isuzu Elf truck (registration UAO 50BZ) traveling from Kampala suffered brake failure, veered into the opposite lane, and first smashed into a Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 729D), killing its driver. It then rear-ended another Hiace (UBR 511N), pushing it into a trench where it flipped over.

Two individuals lost their lives, with details of the second deceased not immediately available. The seven injured passengers were identified as Oguta David Junior (45, Bugembe, Jinja), Kamale Badru (30, Kalerwe, Kampala), Sseluwagi Yusuf (45, Busia), Mugenyi Emmanuel (30, Entebbe), Kyomugisha Shivani (19, Kilyowa, Buikwe), Musoke Medieval (40, Mutundwe, Kampala), and Nakibule Flavia (27, Busia). All injured were rushed to Kawolo Hospital, while the bodies went to the hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The truck driver, Paul Pande, is in police custody as investigations proceed. Police spokesperson Ms Butoto urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid speeding.

This crash highlights Uganda’s alarming road safety crisis. The 2025 police report noted 5,383 road deaths, up from 5,144 in 2024, averaging 15 fatalities daily. Fatalities peaked in October and between 6pm-8pm.
