Daniel Kalinaki’s exit from the Daily Monitor newsroom marks the end of an era. Emilly Comfort Maractho, Chairperson of the Editorial Board Committee at Nation Media Group-Uganda (NMG-U), shared heartfelt reflections on their collaboration since 2013.

Their first meeting in Nairobi stretched from 30 minutes to three hours, covering media challenges, politics, and Uganda’s economy. Despite rumors of his transfer, Kalinaki earned his place through talent. They reconnected in 2022 on the editorial board, united by a drive to attract and retain top journalists amid industry struggles.

Under Kalinaki’s leadership, the board shifted focus to innovative ideas, refreshing the Monitor’s output. The team thrived despite limited resources, empowered by trust and purpose. Maractho credits this to fostering small, talented groups with shared values.

Kalinaki’s board contributions shone with quick thinking and bold experiments. He championed editorial freedom, defended creatives from rigid policies, and prioritized stories over personalities. Efforts to retain him, including sabbatical offers through the 2026 elections, couldn’t match his pursuit of new ventures.

The newsroom mourns his nurturing spirit, calm resilience, curiosity, and respect for diverse views. Maractho learned volumes from him about journalism’s inner workings, valuing his professionalism.

Kalinaki leaves a profound legacy in Ugandan journalism, achieved at great personal cost.
