A tragic accident in Mpigi district claimed two lives when a stone-loaded truck veered off the road and sank into Lukolo swamp on Easter Monday evening.

Police identified one victim as Bosco Lukyamuzi from Kitemu in Kyengera town council, Wakiso district. The second body remains unidentified.

The Sinotruck, registered UBN 909U, was heading to Bunjakko Island when its driver swerved to avoid an oncoming coaster bus, leading to the plunge between river Buwama and the island.

A combined team of police and locals conducted a search, retrieving the bodies late Tuesday night despite challenges from the swamp’s terrain and the truck’s position.

Buwama Town Council resident Jaffar Lukabwe called the recovery operation distressful, noting it extended almost to dawn.

Local leaders, including Buwama Rural Sub-County Chairperson-elect Deo Ssendegeya, attributed the crash to the road’s poor condition, especially the hazardous stretch for heavy vehicles carrying construction materials. They have repeatedly called on the government to widen and upgrade the route.

The bodies were taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary for post-mortem before release to families. The truck was towed to Buwama Police Station for ongoing investigations.
