A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday at the Sewerage roundabout along the Tororo-Mbale Road, claiming the life of 40-year-old Somali national Mariam Nuru, a resident of Malaba Town Council in Tororo District.
Nuru, who was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, reportedly panicked upon spotting a semi-trailer approaching from behind. In a desperate bid to avoid collision, she leaped off the moving bike, only to be crushed by the trailer moments later.
Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson IP Moses Mugwe confirmed the details, noting the involvement of a white Renault truck bearing registration UBS 133F/UBS 615E and an unidentified motorcycle. The rider fled the scene without stopping.
Traffic officers processed the accident site, and Nuru’s body was taken to Tororo Municipal Mortuary for postmortem. The suspect vehicle was later discovered abandoned at a nearby checkpoint and awaits towing to Tororo Police Yard.
“The driver is on the run. We urge the public to share any leads for his arrest,” Mugwe appealed, while reminding motorists to adhere to traffic rules amid rising accidents.
Uganda’s 2025 Police Crime Report highlighted 26,044 road crashes, including 4,602 fatal ones—a 3.8% increase from the previous year.
