Peter Banura, elected as Kikuube District’s inaugural LC5 chairperson in 2021 and recently re-elected, tragically lost his life in a motor accident on the Hoima-Fort Portal Road on April 4. He was 48 years old and set to begin his second term in May.
At his requiem mass held at Christ the King Church in Kampala on April 7, Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi, representing Prime Minister Robinah Nabanjja, described Banura as a visionary leader. Magyezi noted how Banura united local leaders, oversaw the construction of the district headquarters, and elevated Kikuube’s national ranking from 157th to within the top 50 best-performing districts.
Banura was instrumental in environmental efforts, advocating for Bungoma Forest Reserve’s upgrade to national park status. The minister revealed that President Museveni has approved this resolution, paving the way for its transformation into a national game park.
As the son of NRM veteran Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, Banura effectively lobbied for resources, including road maintenance equipment from Works and Transport Minister Gen Katumba Wamala, ensuring a solid road network in Kikuube.
Mourners remembered him as humble, generous, and family-focused. His father recalled Banura’s graceful political style contrasting his own military approach, while his mother shared stories of his community support, like sponsoring a needy child’s education. A cousin praised his conservation dedication, including participation in Good Friday processions.
Banura leaves behind his widow Mable and three children: Martha, Matthew, and Malachi. His body will lie in state in Kikuube today before burial tomorrow in Rumina.
