Dr Andrew Kiggundu, Key Developer of Uganda's Anti-Tick Vaccine, Passes Away

The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) announced the passing of Dr Andrew Kiggundu, a prominent biotechnologist at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI).

Dr Kiggundu served as Principal Research Officer and Anti-Tick Vaccine Production Manager for more than 25 years, advancing biotechnology, biosafety, and research for Uganda’s growth. NARO praised his visionary contributions in a social media statement, noting his lasting impact.

NaLIRRI scientists described him as a mentor and leader, vowing to carry forward his work. The news shocked Uganda’s agricultural and scientific communities.

Condolences poured in from the African Genetic Biocontrol Consortium, which honored his biotechnology dedication, and Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze, who offered sympathies to his family and NARO colleagues.

Dr Kiggundu’s education included a BSc in Botany and Zoology from Makerere University (1991-1993), an MSc in Plant Breeding from the University of the Free State (1997-2000), and a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Pretoria (2001-2005), focusing on protein engineering and bioinformatics. He was affiliated with groups like the African Centre for Gene Technologies.

NARO did not disclose the cause of death.
