Courtroom Showdown in Katanga Case

On April 2, High Court Judge Rosette Comfort Kania presided over a packed courtroom as prosecutors cross-examined Molly Katanga, who had previously testified that she knew nothing of her husband’s killing on November 2, 2023. Katanga suggested Henry shot himself due to mental strain from unpaid loans, including over Shs1 billion to the late Apollo Nyegamehe, alias Aponye.

Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya reminded Katanga of her oath and pressed her on details. She affirmed also being known as Nanunkye or Bananukye and confirmed claims of assault by her husband with a metallic baton, causing breast lumps, high blood pressure, and mobility issues.

Prosecutors played prison footage suggesting she walked unsupported, which Katanga denied, insisting she used a wheelchair since arrest. She signed her name in court to counter hand injury claims and explained crawling to escape the bedroom using her elbow on a double door.

Questions arose over her movements: entering her son Arthur’s empty bedroom, calling household help George, and interactions with daughters Patricia and Martha. Katanga struggled to recall hospital details at Bugolobi Medical Center and IHK, including ambulance transport and police swabbing.

Muwaganya challenged her on an MRI at Lubbies and accused her of fabricating medical evidence. She admitted no medical training and that her husband’s supposed depression stemmed from lay observations after 30 years together.

Presenting loan agreements dated June, August 2023 totaling Shs1 billion and repayment vouchers from Aponye Uganda Ltd up to November 1, 2023—including after Aponye’s July death—Muwaganya disputed financial distress claims. Katanga recognized the documents, which were admitted as exhibits after defense consultation.

The session adjourned early for lunch, with more to follow.
